CHAPTER NINE

THEY WENT INTO the kitchen, which was well set up with impressive appliances, a huge prep area and a service island in the middle. It was as good as any fancy restaurant Harmony had ever seen. “Give me your jacket,” Caleb said. “I’ll hang it up.”

She slipped it off and handed it to him with her hat, too. After he’d put it with his jacket and hat in a small side office, he came back to her and motioned to some backless stools along the island. “Take your pick, and I’ll get the food started. How do you like your eggs?”

“Not burnt.”

“I can do that,” he said with a smile as he crossed to the huge built-in refrigerator that could have held enough food for a small country.

While Caleb cooked, Harmony touched base with Raven. The news was all good. Her daughter had slept until seven o’clock and was now out with Ruby and Dash to see a donkey named Morris. Everything was going well. Raven agreed to bring Joy over after she got back from her donkey visit and had some lunch.

When the food was ready and Caleb had put two plates on the island, both loaded with bacon, eggs and home fries, Harmony actually felt hungry. “If you need anything else, let me know,” Caleb said as he nudged a knife and fork in her direction across the island with his forefinger.

She bit her lip as she noticed how strong his hands looked. Despite his being a white-collar businessman, they were the hands of a man who was used to hard work.

“How’s your tiny person doing?” he asked as he sat down.

She told him and liked the way he smiled when she mentioned Morris. “Kids love that donkey. He’s a real favorite around the place.”

“Dash and Ruby took her to visit him.”

“She’ll be in love right away,” he said. “Can I ask you something?” He passed a couple of napkins over to her.

“Sure.”

“Do you want a different horse if you take another ride around here?”

That took her aback. “Why would you ask that?”

“I thought maybe I made Runt sound more suited to children. I didn’t mean that, not at all.”

“Of course you didn’t, and I’d love to ride Runt again if I can spare the time.”

“Good, now eat up and get some food in your stomach.”

She didn’t have to be told twice. She tried the home fries and eggs, they were good. After washing them down with coffee Caleb had brewed, she said, “You cook a good breakfast.”

“I’m glad. This is pretty much all I can cook in terms of things that don’t require barbeques and sauce.”

“I used to eat my eggs scrambled with hot sauce on them.”

“That sounds good to me, but I don’t know where I’d find hot sauce.”

“I don’t use it anymore because Joy always wants a bite of anything I’m eating. She has a varied palate, but when it comes spicy hot, that’s off the menu. Period. She’s fast when she wants something, and one time she had some of my eggs off my plate and into her mouth before I could stop her.
